Writing and Reading Material

When you think about the words “unique” or “different”, do you have positive or
negative thoughts?

I have  ____________ thoughts, because________

When have you learned something from someone who is different than you?
For example: One of my best friends growing up had parents that were from China. From her
and her family, I learned how to say some words in Mandarin and I got to
learn  about Chinese culture.

Reading Material

Even though our differences may mean that we have to work a little harder to understand
each other, our differences and uniqueness are very positive things.

“OK” reminds us that when we meet new and different people, we should try to learn
more about them.

  • Offer your ideas and listen to others”.
  • Keep an open mind and learn from others”.

Not only do we need to speak up and share our own thoughts and ideas, but we need to
really listen to what others say.

When you have an open mind, you don’t make decisions about people or ideas ahead of
time. You are willing to listen, consider, and accept new ideas. When you have an open mind,
you are happy to see what new things you can learn.

When we listen to others and have an open mind, we can learn all kinds of things from
people who are different from us.
Getting to know you...

In this activity you will discover unique qualities about a classmate! You will have learned
that in addition to how we look, we also have different personalities and interests.

  1. Create 5 Interview Questions
    1. For example: What kind of food do you dislike the most?  What is your favorite
thing to do in your free time? What is your favorite school subject?

  1. Interview your partner via phone or email, or interview your
    sibling/parent/grandparent.

  1. Create a book cover that is all about your partner. Their book cover must show how
their partner is unique. Book covers contain a title and an image that helps the reader
     learn about the story inside.

“Were all different and that's okay”
Create a Collage

“I understand others are unique. I want to learn more about everyone I meet. I want to step into
their shoes and see what they are going through. I am a friend. I support and trust. Working together
is a must. Kind and caring I will be. I listen to you. You listen to me.” - Soar With Wings

You may create your collage online or on paper.

Materials:
  • Images or words from magazines, newspapers, online, etc.
  • If you create it on paper you will also need glue and scissors. Paint/colors are optional.

  1. Fill out the “Questions About Me” worksheet.
  2. Look for images and words that help explain each of your answers, as well as images and
words that are special to you.
  3. On a blank sheet of paper paste a picture of yourself. If you don’t have one, draw yourself.
  4. Select what images and words represent you. Begin decorating your self portrait collage.
    Be creative!
